Colors of the Wind - Sheet Music for Native American Flute

The song Colors of the Wind was the 1995 Oscar-winner for Best Original Song from the Disney animated feature film, Pocahontas. The song poetically presents the Native American viewpoint that the Earth is a living entity where humankind is connected to everything in nature.

Notes on the Sheet Music

Several people, including Sharon Burnett, asked me for an arrangement of this melody on Flutopedia. However, I felt that the original melody spanned too wide a range to be playable on the Native American flute.

Then, on October 27, 2011, Bob Child of Ugly Boy Flutes sent me his transcription, which fits nicely into an extended-range flute using two notes in the second register. He did this by modifying the melody in an intriguing way. He has taken some of the larger interval leaps and reduced them, compressing the overall range of the melody.

For example, the first notes of the melody, as written by composer Alan Menken, would translate to the Native Amercian flute as Finger diagram closed closed closed closed closed closed Finger diagram closed closed open open open open Finger diagram open open closed open open open Finger diagram open open closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed open open open open Finger diagram closed closed open open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed open open Finger diagram closed closed closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed closed half-closed. In Bob Child's arrangement, he has altered the melody to be played as Finger diagram closed closed closed closed closed closed Finger diagram closed closed closed open open open Finger diagram closed open closed open open open Finger diagram closed open closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed open open open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed open open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed open open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed closed open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed open open Finger diagram closed closed closed closed closed closed … making it easier to play, reducing the overall range, and still preserving the flavor of the melody.

Please note that the original melody and lyrics are ©1995 by Wonderland Music Company, Inc. and Walt Disney Music Company. The transcription of Bob Child's arrangement, offered below, is provided as an educational example of altering a melody to fit within a limited range. Although the melody is different from the original version, the original lyrics have been included on my transcription to aid in playing the melody.

Recording

Here's a solo flute recording of the arrangement on this page I made on November 21, 2011:
